Motiva Breast implants
Available in Singapore since 2016, the Motiva breast implant is the current generation of breast implant that is softer, moves more naturally and is safer than previous generations of breast implant.
The enhanced softness and natural movement of this implant is a result of favorable physical characteristics of both the implant shell as well as the silicone gel it contains. These characteristics mean that the gel and shell are soft yet not liquid, stretchable and elastic yet strong and durable, and flexible and adaptable yet not deformable. The end result is that, after full recovery from surgery, Motiva Implants feel and move almost like a real breast.
The increased safety of Motiva Implants is reflected by a greatly reduced capsular contracture rate, and this is due to the features of the implant shell surface, as well as a strong resistance to silicone gel leakage through the implant shell.
FAVORABLE PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF MOTIVA IMPLANTS
A breast implant is made up of two parts: the implant shell, and the silicone gel contained within the shell. The positive physical characteristics of Motiva Implants are due to two things: the rheological characteristics of the gel and implant shell, and the Monobloc structure of the implant.
Rheological Characteristics

Rheology is a branch of physics that studies the deformation and flow of matter. There are four important rheological characteristics of the gel and shell of Motiva Implants: viscosity, cohesivity, elasticity, and viscoelasticity.
Viscosity is a measure of the silicone gel’s resistance to flow. The silicone gel in Motiva Implants has low viscosity, making it soft rather than firm. Cohesivity measures how well the gel holds together without breaking up even when stretched. The silicone gel of Motiva Implants has high cohesivity, making it resistant to breaking up when squeezed or stretched. Elasticity is how well the gel returns to its normal shape after being stretched or compressed. Motiva Implants have high levels of elasticity. Viscoelasticity is a measure of the gel’s flexibility and adaptability in response to deformational forces, e.g. gravity. Motiva Implants have high viscoelasticity, meaning that they are more pliable, flexible and adaptable.
TRUEMONOBLOC STRUCTURE (TRUE TISSUE TECHNOLOGY)
The monobloc structure of the implant means that all its components have the same rheological characteristics, so they all perform as a single structure. This is achieved by a different technology known as True Tissue Technology whereby the shell to gel interface has a high degree of adhesion due to the chemical structure of the gel. The optimal adhesion of the gel to the shell is thus produced by a favorable chemical interaction between the silicone polymers of the gel and the silicone polymers of the shell.
As a result, the shell is just as soft, elastic and adaptable as the gel inside the implant. This greatly improves the mechanical performance of the implant and also facilitates implant insertion. This also means that Motiva Implants can be inserted through smaller incisions than usual, which in turn produces smaller scars for patients.
SAFETY OF MOTIVA IMPLANTS
The high level of safety of Motiva Implants is due to two things: the physical properties of the surface of the implant shell, and an effective barrier in the implant shell that prevents silicone from leaking out.
Silksurface
The surface of the Motiva Implants shell is finely textured. This texturing is so fine that it is measured in nanometers and it feels almost smooth. This is known as the SilkSurface of the implant shell. Scientific studies have shown that this exceedingly fine texturing results in the body’s tissues reacting favorably to the presence of the implant, and the body does not produce much inflammation in the tissues around the implant in response to the implant shell. This lack of inflammatory response means that the capsule of scar tissue that tends to form around the implant is thin and soft. Thus, the risk of capsular contracture (thickening and contraction of the capsule causing the implant to feel too firm and the shape to become too round) is very low, and is well below one percent.

In addition, other complications of breast implants such as seromas (accumulation of fluid around the implant) and ALCL (a form of lymphoma that has recently been found to be associated with the previous generation of textured implants) have thus far not been reported in patients with Motiva Implants in its more than seven year history worldwide.
BLUESEAL BARRIER

The diffusion of low molecular weight silicones through the implant shell, known as gel bleed, is suspected to be a factor that could increase the risk of capsular contracture. An intact barrier in the implant shell is therefore essential to prevent gel bleed. The BluSeal® barrier of the Motiva Implants is a layer of silicone within the implant shell with a special chemical composition that prevents the low molecular weight silicones from passing through the shell. BluSeal® technology therefore provides assurance to surgeon and patient alike that the intact barrier of the Motiva Implants shell prevents leakage of silicone gel from the implant to the surrounding tissues, further enhancing the safety of this implant
Q INSIDE SAFETY TECHNOLOGY
Q inside safety technology is a US FDA cleared, hitherto unavailable technology that provides an electronic serial number for control and verification of the implant for safety purposes. Each Motiva Implants has a passive Radio Frequency Identification device (RFID), which is a microtransponder designed for use in humans that enables the traceability of unique and valuable information of the breast implant. The information is obtained using a hand held reader and the appropriate Motiva software.
The secure information provided by the Electronic Serial Number (ESN) ensures immediate and precise identification in the event of a safety issue or product recall. The ESN provides the following important and useful information: serial number, lot number, reference number, model, volume, surface type, and date of manufacture.
This innovative technology has been proven to be safe, effective and remains working in all conditions to which it can be exposed. And because it doesn’t require a battery, its life expectancy is indefinite. It is therefore effective for the lifetime of the implant. Q Inside Safety Technology is also compatible with MRI and mammography scanning.
Importantly, patients cannot be tracked through this technology. The information obtained relates to the implant only and there is no personal data associated with it.

CONCLUSION
The softness, natural movement, and high level of safety of Motiva Implants are the result of the distinct physical characteristics of these implants. These favorable properties are the reasons why they are currently the preferred type of breast implant of many patients.
