CUTERA EXCEL V LASER

The Cutera Excel V dual wavelength laser is a current generation and versatile aesthetic laser that treats blood vessels in the skin and superficial pigmentation. In addition, it can be used to treat fine wrinkles, enlarged pores, acne scars and to produce skin tightening. Finally, it can also be used for hair removal.

VASCULAR FUNCTIONS

The Excel V is an effective vascular (related to blood vessels) laser. When operated in this way, the laser energy causes blood vessels in and under the skin to shrink, causing them to become less visible. This makes it useful for removing unsightly red capillaries (known as telangiectasia) and purple spider veins on the face, and spider veins and green reticular veins that are commonly present on the thighs, legs and behind the knees. It can also be used to treat Rosacea effectively. This is a skin condition where the face turns red easily and the skin is sensitive.

TREATMENT OF BENIGN PIGMENTED LESIONS

The Excel V can also be used to treat benign (non-cancerous) pigmentation problems of the skin, as long as the pigmentation is superficial. When used in this mode, the laser energy is absorbed by the pigmentation, which breaks down and flakes off.

COLLAGEN STIMULATION FUNCTIONS

The Excel V has a collagen stimulation mode that can be used to treat fine wrinkles, enlarged pores and acne scars, and to promote skin tightening. In this mode, the laser energy is absorbed by the collagen and collagen producing cells in the deep layer of the skin.

Tightening of existing collagen fibers and the production of new collagen can result in smoothing of wrinkles, tightening of pores, improvement in acne scars and overall skin tightening of the face.

HAIR REMOVAL FUNCTION

Excel V can also be tuned for hair removal. The appropriate wavelength and settings are used so that the laser energy is selectively absorbed by the hair roots without injuring the skin. The hair roots are heated up and destroyed in this process, so that hair does not regrow from these roots.

All Excel V laser treatments are non-invasive, no downtime procedures. Numbing cream is applied beforehand. In most modes, during the treatment, there is simultaneous cooling of the skin for increased comfort and safety. Pain is usually limited to a mild pinprick sensation or may even be absent as the laser energy is delivered in short pulses.

In collagen stimulation mode, there is no cooling because the deep layer of the skin is intentionally heated up for this purpose. The patient will experience a gradual increase in temperature as the treatment progresses, with a feeling of increasing warmth until the target temperature is reached. At this time the skin feels hot but not unbearably so. This state is maintained for a short while to maximize collagen stimulation, then the next area is addressed.

Each treatment usually produces visible improvement. Treatments are typically preformed once a month, and the number of treatments required to obtain good results is usually three to six for all conditions except for hair removal, which usually requires at least eight treatments. Additional treatments beyond these numbers will usually produce further improvement.

After the treatment, there is usually no pain. When veins and capillaries have been treated, these vessels look smaller, darker and less visible. Sometimes they disappear completely. There may be a mild degree of redness over the treated areas. Occasionally, mild swelling of the skin may occur. These harmless side effects usually subside after several hours.

When Rosacea has been treated, there is a variable degree of residual redness as a side effect. In mild rosacea, the redness is slight and transient. In severe Rosacea, the redness is moderate and can take one to two days to subside.

After the treatment of pigmentation, the pigmentation becomes darker as a result of having absorbed the laser energy. This is accompanied by mild redness and occasionally mild swelling of the surrounding skin, both of which subside in several hours. The darkened pigmentation then dries up and flakes off during the course of the first week post treatment.

After collagen stimulation treatments, mild redness occurs as a side effect. This normally subsides after a few hours.

After hair removal treatments, there may be mild redness and swelling around the hair follicles which subsides after a few hours.
